Description:

Valved Holding Chamber or spacingdevice

Common Uses: This device helps coordinate breathing while using an inhaler or puffer. Using a holding chamber or spacer may improve the delivery of medicine to the lungs and help prevent side effects such as mouth sores, hoarseness, and bad taste.

Directions:

This device attaches to the mouthpiece of an inhaler. It holds a puff of medicine for a few seconds, until you are ready to inhale it. This allows you to take your time and breathe in the medicine over a few breaths. This device comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about using this device. TO USE THIS DEVICE: Remove cap from inhaler and the holding chamber. Shake inhaler. Insert the inhaler into the end of the holding chamber. Breathe out normally. Depress inhaler so that one puff is released into the holding chamber. Inhale using the mouthpiece or mask depending which unit was recommended (refer to patient information if you are unsure). Remove the inhaler and replace the protective cap on the inhaler and holding chamber after each use.

Cautions:

It is important to hold your breath for at least 5 seconds for the medicine to be absorbed into the lungs. Count the seconds or take a few smaller breaths trying to hold each one in for as long as possible. If more than one puff is prescribed at a time, wait at least 30 seconds between puffs, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Clean the holding chamber with a mild soap and lukewarm water weekly or when a coating builds up inside the chamber. Rinse and allow to air dry. Do not dry with a cloth. Possible Side Effects: NO COMMON SIDE EFFECTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED with the proper use of this medicine. If you notice any unusual effects, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
