What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

Take this medication once a day by mouth with or without food, at the same time each day.

Follow your doctor's instructions exactly and don't skip any doses. Missing doses or taking the pill at different times can increase the risk of pregnancy.

If you vomit or have diarrhea within a few hours of taking the pill, read the leaflet on what to do if you miss a dose. Vomiting or diarrhea can affect how well the pill works.

Taking the medication after dinner or at bedtime can help if it upsets your stomach. Take it at the same time every day, 24 hours apart.

Your pill pack contains 26 pills with active medication and 2 reminder pills with iron. Take one active pill daily for 26 days, then take one reminder pill with iron daily for 2 days. Start a new pack the day after the last reminder pill, even if you're still having your period or haven't had it. Ask your doctor if you don't get your period.

Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes and report any significant changes or symptoms to your doctor.

Inform your doctor if you have upcoming surgery or if you will be immobile for a prolonged period, as this can increase the risk of blood clots.
